A dangerous grandma who drove the wrong way around a roundabout started a wierd 10mph chase that lasted 27 miles because she refused to stop.
The leisurly pursuit was eventually halted when a policeman ran alongside her car on a dual carriageway and tapped on the window.
The driver was 76-year-old Caroline Turner, who found herself banged up in a police cell overnight as a result of the slow chase.
Explaining away the incident, Mrs Turner told the Daily Mail that “my driving was not up to its usual high standards – but there was a lack of lighting and I went the wrong way.”
That momentary dip in her standards sparked one of the most surreal police chases since OJ Simpson drove away from the police quite slowly because he hadn’t killed his wife.
After causing chaos in her blue Ford Fiesta by careering head-on towards other road users on the roundabout, in Thorpe, Essex, she was followed by an unmarked police car down the A120 and onto the A12. The police car’s lights were flashing.
According to officers the chase never hit more than 20mph, but prompted police to form a rolling roadblock on the dual carriageway.
It was only after an industrious officer decided to run after her that the chase came to a close. When asked by the out-of-breath copper to pull over, “Why? What have I done?” was Mrs Turner’s reply, all the while still dawdling along.
It was explained to her that perhaps driving into oncoming traffic on a roundabout was a bad idea, and that it might be a good thing to stop so they could evaluate her ‘high standards’ together. “There is nothing to discuss,” she said, “I’m going home.”
But after eventually seeing the light, so to speak, she pulled over.
Hauled in front of magistrates the following day, she was charged with driving without due care and attention, fined £100 plus £100 costs and banned from driving for 12 months.
